. Family. country - USA. 7,9 of 10 Stars. Year - 1944. director - Vincente Minnelli. Nita Bieber was in this movie! 😚☺😀😘🎹🎶🎶🎼. Donald O'Connor was the better dancer in this scene. That song Are You From Dixie? it's like an amphetamine high, every time I hear it it's like floating on a cloud of joy. I never was the biggest Judy Garland fan but no can sing this song like she does it was made for her & how she says “once in a lullaby” is so angelic & pure.

If you don't want to watch a film unless it is contemporary and realistic, you should give this a miss. If that's not the case, however, Meet Me in St. Louis is eminently worth watching. Yes, the setting and characterizations are completely idealized and even hokey, but the gorgeous Technicolor gives it a holiday card flavor and the acting is above reproach.
The Christmas montage, beginning from Judy Garland's definitive rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and culminating in Margaret O'Brien's destruction of her beloved snowmen while sobbing hysterically, is an absolute classic. If you can watch this scene (especially knowing how Vincente Minelli evoked such an emotional response from O'Brien) and NOT be moved, this is probably not the right movie for you.
Treat this film as if it were a greeting card: savor the bright colors and the sappiness, and don't look for deep meaning or symbolism.

Thank goodness, Ted Turner saw the historical value of the wonder classics

Today this movie is so funny and silly, so innocent and so naive, this film genre doesn't even exist anymore, it would be outrageous to make this type of film because it is old fashioned for todays standards... Happy 92nd Birthday Judy! From a 21 year old that holds you in high admiration. It is a wonderful movie, Ingrid Bergman was a great and sweet actor, and Bing Crosby had such a lovely voice. it was nice to  watch this great movie, thanks for posting. Thanks for this. Ahhh a lovely film one of the best can have a good old sing song to it. What I love is that this song came out in 1944 - the last year of the second world war. By that point, the world had had years of difficulties, and it must have been written partly to give people hope. And as it turns out, the lyrics were right - because by the next year, their troubles really were gone, because the war had finally ended. It just adds so much poignancy to the song, knowing that in a way the lyrics were all true - if you hold on to hope long enough, things will get better, no matter how hopeless it might seem.

God I wish this was an instrumental band, or at least had a singer who brought something to the table. It is so freaking good, and they throw generic emo guy voice over it... a real shame.

Still love this movie in 2019. She loved this film cos she said her hubby made her looks so beautiful, she said. Such a lovely film, fun songs and a great performance from the queen of showbiz. Of all the versions of this great play, there will only be ONE king, and that's Yul. RIP.

Yes she had some issues, but she didn't have a tragic life. I fell in love with this movie and could watch it for hours. each actor and actress performed their roles sublimely. I especially became enchanted with Lucille Bremer as Rose AND Mary Astor as the mother. Judy Garland was totally a young woman preparing for her first tryst with a young man. i am sure she impressed Vincent Minelle with her high stepping dancing at the party. truly, Judy was showing that she was no longer a child but ready for more mature rolls. Mary Astor showed that she could handle her husband and the family adroitly. Lucille Bremer made Rose out to be redheaded vixen when it came to keeping Warren Sheffield. i totally enjoy myself watching the machinations of the Smith women.

This is so gay. Twice as gay as Anchors Away

I thought was American werewolf kkkk. I cried about 9 Christmases ago listening to Someday soon we will all be together, if fate allows. Anyone noticed he has the same singing voice as Edward Norton? Just look for Edward Norton in Everyone Says I Love You. Judy was beautiful inside and out, I wish Hollywood wasnt so hard on her, shes so skinny here! That voice just, their is no words to describe how she made me feel as a kid growing up. Mesmerizing voice! A timeless beauty. Your soul and music will live forever in everyones heart Judy! Youre my idol and an inspiration to all. ♥️.

What a wonderful old movie! This film just drips quality throughout with its terrific direction, acting, singing, writing and production. While not the best MGM film ever made, it certainly is among the best musicals they made. That's because not only are there a modest number of songs, but those in the film are awfully enjoyable- particularly the final song, HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE Christmas. It was pure magic and is probably Judy Garland's best adult performance- she is radiant and on the top of her game.
I think another reason I love this movie so is that it is not just a bunch of songs thrown at the audience, but a very enjoyable slice of life film about a wonderful family filled with great characters. From the tough but loving father to the bratty littlest child (played by Margaret O'Brien in her best performance) they all are special and sweet without being too saccharine.
This makes a wonderful Christmas movie and is best viewed on Christmas Eve with the lights turned low.
FYI- If you have a chance, get a hold of the wonderful two-disk set. The second disk has an amazing set of extras- enough to keep you very busy and very happy. One of the shorts, Bubbles" is NOT good but still well worth seeing despite its creepy characters, as you get to see Judy Garland performing like a pro at age 7.

Gay culture is realizing that while everybody had a crush on the boy, you had a crush on the oldest daughter.
